LEGO and Star Wars have had a fruitful partnership over the past twenty years. From the prequels to the sequel trilogy of today, these two juggernauts have gone hand in hand. LEGO Star Wars is so popular that it’s inspired LEGO to create its video games based on the line of toys. Starting in 2005, LEGO’s created a game based on the first six films, The Force Awakens, and even the hit show Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
What they plan on doing next year, though, is going to dwarf everything they’ve done thus far. In 2020, LEGO will give fans the ultimate LEGO Star Wars game: The Skywalker Saga. Leaked to the public months ago, the game was officially announced at E3 2019 to great fanfare.
Given how LEGO’s made video games based on most of the Star Wars films, it wouldn’t be out of the question to think this is just an HD remake. That couldn’t be further from the truth, though. Game Director James McLoughlin has said that they are rebuilding the Star Wars adventure from the ground up.
While recent LEGO games have allowed for greater freedom of movement and open world exploration, LEGO: The Skywalker Saga plans to push that to the extreme. Rather than focus on the films, the game’s new, open world lets players explore the settings of the movie between chapters for a film. You could start with Return of the Jedi, bail on the story, and run around Tatooine to your heart’s content.
At the time of this writing, the game has yet to get an official release date. All that’s known is that it will come out sometime in 2020, and include all nine of the main films. This includes the upcoming “Rise of Skywalker” movie. Gamers will not have to worry about getting left out, though: Lego: Skywalker will be available on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The co-op will remain a part of the gameplay mechanics, so fans can still have fun playing it on the couch as they did in the old days.
The game’s announcement also happens to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the partnership between LEGO and Star Wars. With the story of the Skywalker Family seemingly coming to a close in December, this game will be a perfect send-off to the original epic that fans have loved for more than forty-two years.
